Rao’s appointment as ICHR head irks AMU historians – The Times of India

18 Jul

Appointment of Y Sudershan Rao, a votary of ‘sanatan’ Hindu religion, as chairperson of the Indian Council of Historical Research ICHR, has not gone down well with history teachers and scholars at the Aligarh Muslim University AMU, many of whom have served as members of the body in the past.

Scholars at AMU doubt Rao’s credentials as a historian and believe his appointment is in gross violation of the charter that created the research body.

Eminent historian Irfan Habib, who served as the chairman of ICHR between 1986 and 1990, finds the new appointment dubious. “It is true that when appointments are made to such institutes, no qualifications are laid down. But still the ICHR was created by a charter which has some objectives, such as exhorting scientific approach towards research work.

The new chairperson should not start with contesting the very charter that created the body he is to head,” says Habib. The ICHR was set under Societies Registration Act in 1972.
